A Different Approach to Dental Hygiene
I had the privilege of meeting with a woman last week who had found me online while looking for a Rotadent toothbrush. We chatted on the phone for her initial 15 minute free of charge consultation, and what I found most intriguing about her situation was that she truly is focused on doing her very best.
There is not a day that goes by where she spends less than 30 minutes a day on her mouth, yet she like so many other people are still having areas of issue. She is in the middle of a change in dentists and has found herself with someone that she is not sure she can trust. What I find interesting about her situation is the same thing that I find interesting in most of the cases that I see.
She sees her dentist regularly for maintenance appointments where they continually praise her on the work and efforts that she is doing, never really giving her the tools that she needs to be an ambassador for her own independent health. She, like most patients look to the treating office for validation and recognition for a job well done, which in turn holds her hostage to where she “needs” to see someone for regular dental hygiene appointments. Never before had someone sat next to her and showed her one on one what the inside of her mouth looked like.
Wouldn’t it be nice if SHE could determine her level of health, and possibly learn the techniques that it takes to clean each and every nook and cranny in her mouth? That was what our meeting together was all about. We played with tools, took a deep look at what was attainable for her, and studied what to use and how to use it. We sat at a table across from one another, in chairs just as if we were sharing a cup of tea.
We discussed what was important to her, and designed a series for her that would help her achieve a level of health that she felt was attainable and maintainable. In the end, she did end up with a Rotadent, but she left with much more. She left feeling that regardless of what dental office she chooses to visit, she can look to herself for validation of a job well done. She knows what tools to use, why they work, and most importantly what a clean mouth feels like to her tongue.
This is what I was MEANT to do, and I am loving the honest impact I am able to make, even if it is one toothbrush at a time!
