Is Your Toothbrush Too Hard? The Quest For The Best Soft Toothbrush Is On.

It’s rare to find a local bowling alley anymore, but when I was growing up, going bowling was a popular activity for most people. You would walk through the doors, go up to the counter and ask for a pair of shoes in your size. You didn’t want to know how many people had worn those shoes before you. Don’t ask questions, I would always think to myself, just grab the shoes and put them on. I loved walking down the rows of bowling balls and seeing the array of colors all shiny and swirling. My favorite memories of bowling were when they would turn the overhead lights down, bring up the disco lights, and pump up the music.

Although I loved bowling, I was never that good at it. When it was my turn, I would line my feet up, take a few quick steps, and throw the ball as hard as I could underhand. There were a few times that I would get lucky and knock a few pins down on either side, but often the ball would land almost immediately in the gutter. I didn’t realize that I would score more points if I was less heavy-handed with the ball and used a gentle touch.

Sometimes you can try too hard at something and end up making it worse. It’s a common fallacy that if you just brush your teeth harder, that you’ll get better results. Actually, you’ll see improved results if you use a softer touch.

Don’t Brush So Hard

Not only should you brush softly to get better results, you can do more damage to your teeth and gums if you continue to brush too vigorously. When you brush, you want to make sure that you are focusing on the gum tissue. Remember that when you brush your teeth, it’s more important to focus on gum stimulation and gum massaging. You want to use a light handle to let the toothbrush bristles do most of the work. If you are scrubbing your teeth really hard, then you aren’t allowing the bristles to get in between your teeth.

Is Your Soft Brush Actually Soft?

Randomly enough there is no true standard for toothbrush bristles and how they work. One toothbrush could be labeled firm and another soft, but if you were to compare them, they would both feel nearly identical. So you need to be careful when you’re choosing a toothbrush head as far as how the bristles work because you don’t want something that’s too hard that will dig into your gums and cause damage. This is why I love the TePe Supreme Toothbrush.

Why I Love The Tepe Supreme

The Tepe Supreme toothbrush is a soft, manual toothbrush and it has different levels in the brush. These levels are called ETBs, extremely tapered bristles. What I love about this brush is the way that the bristles are able to get into the gum tissue, but in a way that’s massaging and stimulating for the gums. It is able to clean the teeth and gums without doing any damage. It’s a much softer brush than what you can traditionally find at your local grocery store, so you don’t have to worry about the bristles getting stuck in your gums. If you combine using a brush like the TePe Supreme with gentle, effective brushing technique, you’ll be able to see better results, relatively fast.

The Tepe Supreme Compact

The TePe Supreme is one of my all-time favorite toothbrushes, but then TePe went and made the TePe Supreme Compact, which is a smaller version and is so versatile it’s difficult to choose which one I like better at this point. I love the TePe Supreme Compact because you can use this for most areas in an adult's mouth and a small child’s mouth. Again, it’s the bi-level bristle design that makes this toothbrush do the work it needs to do. Don’t be afraid that this doesn’t specifically say that it’s a kid’s brush, that it’s not a good size for a kid’s mouth. This smaller brush will work for many mouths, including teeny tiny kids, and is a great brush for babies as well.

I hope that you learned why it’s important to brush your teeth softly and how using a soft toothbrush at the gumline is key to controlling biofilm and balancing your mouth’s ph level.
